After you've bleached your hair blond, you may be left with undesirable red or orange tones. These striking tones are often referred to as "brassy" and can be difficult to remove without the help of a hair care professional. However, there are several steps you can take to neutralize these brassy tones at home without spending the extra money at a hair salon. You can purchase all of the products you will need at your local beauty supply store.
Mix the hair toner according to package directions. You may need to purchase a separate developing agent, so check with a sales associate if you're unsure about what products you need. Be sure to select a toner with blue tones since this will properly neutralize the brassy reds in your hair.
Apply the toner to your hair with the applicator brush. Start at the roots and move outwards toward the tips. If you're having trouble seeing the back of your head, you may want to enlist a friend for help. You can run a wide-toothed comb through your hair once you have applied all of the toner to ensure even application. Allow the toner to process in your hair according to package directions.
Wash your hair thoroughly with shampoo. Be sure to use conditioner, since your hair will be slightly damaged after the toning process. Towel dry and style as usual.
To maintain your newly neutralized hair color, use a shampoo with blue tones designed to remove red and orange brassiness. You can find shampoos specially made for this purpose at beauty supply stores. Since toner is only semipermanent, your hair can revert to its pre-neutralized color without proper care.
