If you are searching for a way to give your dark hair extra depth and contrast, blonde highlights may be the perfect solution. Blonde highlights in dark hair offer a dramatic look that you can tailor to suit your needs, creating big, chunky highlights or thin, less noticeable streaks of color. By carefully following the instructions in your hair color kit, you can achieve beautiful results for a fraction of the cost of going to a salon.
Lightening dark hair
Buy a hair highlighting kit in the shade of blonde you want. If you have black or extremely dark hair and want dramatic blonde highlights, you will need to choose a kit with bleach. Dark hair rarely gets more than two or three shades lighter unless you use bleach. Put on an old T-shirt and assemble all your materials.
Read the highlighting instructions carefully. Complete the strand test to make sure you are not allergic to the hair color. Decide where you want your highlights and how big you want them. If you are going for a dramatic look, large chunks will give you more contrast, and if you want a more natural look, go for thinner streaks.
Put the gloves on and the cap on your head.
Mix the hair color until it is well-blended.
Pull the hair you want to highlight through the cap one section at a time, brushing the highlight mixture onto each section. Be sure to start at the roots and cover the whole length of the sections.
Set the timer for the recommended amount of time for your hair shade. If you are using bleach, you will be able to see your hair lighten as time passes and you can rinse when you reach the desired shade. Do not leave the hair color on for longer than the recommended time as it will damage your hair.
Rinse the highlights out of your hair and condition all of your hair with after-color conditioner. Leave the conditioner on for the recommended amount of time and then rinse. Dry and style your hair as usual. If your highlights are still not light enough, you can repeat the process in a month, when your hair has had time to repair itself.
