How to Get Rid of Skunk Smell With Dawn, Peroxide and Baking Soda

by Tammi Clements ; Updated September 28, 2017

There are few things worse than being on the losing end of a tangle with a skunk. It is important to eliminate the offending odor as soon as possible to avoid the smell from setting in or transferring. That not-so-pleasant smell can easily be removed with a few common household products. This method is quick and works for both humans and animals.

Items you will need

  • Large bucket
  • 1 quart hydrogen peroxide
  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1 tbsp. Dawn dish detergent
  • Sponge
Step 1

Add 1 gallon of water to a large bucket.

Step 2

Add 1 quart of hydrogen peroxide, 1 cup of baking soda and 1 tbsp. of Dawn dish detergent to the bucket of water.

Step 3

Allow the mixture to fizz.

Step 4

Dip a sponge into the solution in the bucket.

Step 5

Use the wet sponge to lather the affected area of the skin or hair.

Step 6

Let the solution sit for approximately 10 to 15 minutes.

Step 7

Rinse and repeat steps 4, 5, and 6.

  • If this mixture goes into the eyes, it will cause burning. Place petroleum jelly on your eyebrows to protect your eyes from the cleaning solution.

  • If you are using this removal method on your pet, be advised that the hydrogen peroxide may cause bleaching of the fur. You can use lemon juice or white vinegar as a substitute, although they are not as effective as hydrogen peroxide.
