While products such as styling gels, hairsprays and some shampoos can help a person achieve their desired hairstyle, they can also leave behind build-up. Build-up on gray hair results in unsightly discoloration. A great home remedy for discoloration of gray hair is homemade clarifying shampoo. Easy and inexpensive to make, these shampoos can be made at home with ingredients from the kitchen pantry.

Making your own clarifying shampoo has both healthy and budget friendly benefits. Trips to the salon for expensive shampoos are spared, and exposure to the irritating chemicals they contain is eliminated. The time spent whipping up your own clarifying shampoo recipe compared to the time spent sitting in a salon is much shorter.

Time Frame

The ingredients found in homemade clarifying shampoos can be found in any household pantry, or can be purchased for just a few dollars. You will need 3 tbsp. apple cider vinegar, 3 tbsp. baking soda, 1 1/2 tsp. honey and 1/4 tsp. water. In a bowl , mix all of the ingredients together to form a paste. Apply the paste to the hair, beginning at the scalp, and working toward the ends. The paste can be left on the scalp for up to five minutes before rinsing. One rinse is sufficient to remove the paste. Follow with conditioner if desired. Use as often as needed.

Repeated use of homemade clarifying shampoo will remove the discoloration on gray hair from build-up as well as add shine and body back into the hair.
