Aside from being a healthful snack and a great way to keep your intestinal tract in tip-top shape, yogurt is an inexpensive, natural way to repair and replenish dry, lifeless hair, especially during the cold winter months. Don’t waste money on expensive store-bought moisturizing shampoos; instead, create a simple product from yogurt and other safe, natural ingredients.
Bring 1 quart water to a hard boil over high heat. Drop 8 tablespoons castile soap into a medium-sized mixing bowl; castile is an olive oil-based soap available at craft stores. Carefully pour the boiling water over the castile soap. Stir the water until the soap is completely melted. Set the bowl aside.
Create a mixture of 1 tablespoon olive oil, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, 1 tablespoon honey and 1 cup plain yogurt in a separate bowl. Whip the mixture until creamy with a hand mixer or blender on a medium setting.
Combine the castile soap and yogurt mixtures and stir well. Pour mixture into an empty shampoo bottle or jar with tight-fitting lid. If the castile soap is warm, set the shampoo aside until it’s completely cooled.
Dampen your hair with lukewarm water and work the shampoo into your hair and scalp. Rinse the product thoroughly and follow-up with your favorite moisturizing conditioner. Refrigerate the remaining product.
- Omit the lemon juice if you have color-treated hair.
- If you have dry hair, omit the lemon juice and instead add an additional tablespoon olive oil.
- If you suffer from split ends, add 1 tablespoon of almond oil to the mixture. Allow the mixture to remain and penetrate your ends for two to three minutes before rinsing it away with warm water.
- Add 10 to 20 drops of your favorite essential or fragrance oil to customize your shampoo's odor.
