Scalp psoriasis can be a significant inconvenience. The persistent itchy, dry skin can make you feel self conscious and may cause hair loss in some people. Though typical medical treatments exist, those that support alternative health recommend using apple cider vinegar for managing scalp psoriasis symptoms. If symptoms persist after consistent use, see a doctor.

About Scalp Psoriasis

Scalp psoriasis is standard psoriasis that just so happens to be located on the scalp. According to PsoriasisNet, scalp psoriasis occurs when plaque develops on the skin. Plaque appears as thickened patches of skin that may be red or inflamed and silver in color. Because it's on the scalp, scalp psoriasis may be hidden within the hair in small patches or may spread out across the entire scalp, covering the neck, back of the ears and forehead. According to PsoriasisNet, common symptoms include persistent itching, flaking, the appearance of dandruff, bleeding and hair loss.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar and all other kinds of vinegar have been used as home remedy tonics for centuries. According to "Medscape General Medicine," vinegar use can be traced back to 420 BC when it was utilized by Hippocrates in wound care. Vinegar has shown to be effective at killing bacteria on food, though little research has been conducted to verify its effectiveness in treating infections of the skin.

Home Remedy

To relieve the itching and irritation of psoriasis on the scalp, apply apple cider vinegar to the area for relief. According to "Joey Green's Amazing Kitchen Cures: 1,150 Ways to Prevent and Cure Common Ailment With Brand Name Products," you can spray the scalp with a mixture of apple cider vinegar and water. Simply combine the vinegar and water and put it in a mister spray bottle. Green suggests storing the mixture in the refrigerator for an added cooling sensation. If you have cracked skin, open sores or bleeding scales on your scalp, skip the vinegar treatment and see a doctor. Vinegar would only irritate the skin and cause a significant burning sensation.

Scalp Psoriasis Treatment

Standard scalp psoriasis treatments aim to reduce skin inflammation and reduce the immune response that causes the disease by slowing down skin cell turnover. According to PsoriasisNet, topical corticosteroids and creams may be used in mild cases of psoriasis, but this can be messy on the scalp. Other treatments include light therapy, oral medications and injections.
