Catfish is a freshwater fish, living mainly in rivers and lakes. Most of today's catfish is farm-raised, however. It may be a rather unattractive fish, sporting whiskers similar to a cat's, but the flesh is white and delicate with a mild flavor many people enjoy. Catfish is a popular fish eaten throughout the South; it is often breaded and fried. However, catfish cooked with a Cajun seasoning is also a common way of preparing it.

Broil

Preheat the broiler in the oven.

Dry the catfish fillet by patting it well with paper towels.

Cover the catfish with your favorite Cajun seasonings.

Place the fish on a broiler sheet greased with 2 tsp. olive oil or sprayed with a nonstick cooking spray.

Cook the catfish fillet for six to seven minutes. The fish will flake with a fork when it is done.

Bake

Preheat the oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit.

Rub Cajun seasonings all over the catfish fillet.

Grease a baking dish with 2 tsp. olive oil or nonstick cooking spray.

Place the fish in the baking dish and cook the fillet in the oven for 10 to 13 minutes. The fish will be done cooking when it flakes with a fork.

Pan Fry

Preheat a skillet with 1 tbsp. olive oil over medium-high heat.

Pat the catfish dry with paper towels.

Spread your choice of Cajun seasonings all over the catfish.

Place the fish in the skillet and cook for three to four minutes on each side. When the catfish is done cooking it will flake with a fork.

Tips

Create your own Cajun spice mix to control the amount of heat or buy a prepackaged Cajun rub at the grocery store.

A general Cajun spice mix contains a combination of salt, garlic powder, ground red pepper, white pepper, onion powder, black pepper, cayenne pepper, chili powder, basil or thyme.
