Munching on carrot sticks may elicit an immediate sense of virtue, but the positive effects of the healthy choice extend far beyond your snack. Eating a well-balanced diet with plenty of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy and lean protein offers physical and mental benefits that will last a lifetime.

Effects on the Body

The World Health Organization identifies several important effects of a healthy diet on the body. Well-balanced nutrition bolsters your immune system, increasing your ability of fight illness and diseases. A healthy diet also reduces your risk of conditions including obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer and bone and connective tissue disorders.

Palliative for the Mind and Spirit

Because good nutrition is associated with healthy weight maintenance, it's no surprise that a good diet may improve your self-esteem. Giving your body the correct fuel will give you more energy and an overall sense of well-being. Sampling a diverse array of healthy foods from different cultures is also an opportunity to broaden your horizons and taste buds.
