If your hands are starting to resemble your pricey alligator skin boots, it’s time to fix the dryness. Not only can dry hands make you self-conscious, it can be an itchy, painful problem. Water, cleaning products, soaps and even the weather can contribute to dry hands, but it’s not a problem that has no solution. Pamper your hands with a little extra TLC to fix the dryness and replenish moisture to the skin. Then you won’t be shy about high-fiving your colleagues or offering your hand for a handshake at meeting.
Wash your hands right. Use mild hand soap, preferably one with glycerin, to moisturize the skin, and rinse well to remove soap residue that can dry out your skin. Avoid using soaps that contain alcohol, which is irritating and drying. Wash your hands with cold or warm water rather than hot, and pat them dry with a soft towel instead or rubbing.
Load up your hands with moisturizer every time you wash them and throughout the day as they start feeling dry. Choose a moisturizer that contains ingredients like lanolin or glycerin, which are hydrating.
Wear knit gloves in the wintertime while outside to protect your skin from the wind and cold temperatures, both of which can lead to dryness. Put on rubber gloves when cleaning or using any harsh chemicals that may dry out or irritate the skin.
Give your hands a deep moisturizing treatment at night. Soak your hands in warm water for about five minutes. Dry them with a soft towel. Rub a generous coating of moisturizing hand ointment or petroleum jelly onto your hands, then put on a pair of cotton gloves. Sleep with the ointment and gloves on your hands. Do this every night until the dryness is gone.
Make a homemade exfoliating hand scrub to get rid of the dry skin while moisturizing at the same time. Combine ¼ cup of brown sugar, ¼ cup of olive oil and 1 tablespoon of honey into a bowl. Scrub the mixture onto your hands for about a minute. Let it sit on your skin for 10 to 15 minutes before rinsing it off with cool water.
