Leftover lunch ingredients don’t always need to go to waste. Items found in your fridge are great ingredients for homemade hair conditioners. Whatever the cause, dry hair can be fixed with the right care. Natural and cost efficient, you can make these treatments in the luxury of your own home. Best of all, you can snack while you pack it on your locks.

Honey, I'm Home

Naturally absorbent, honey gives your hair added moisture and helps your mane retain it. Mix one to two tablespoons of olive oil with half a cup of honey. If your hair is damaged from the sun, you can mix half a cup of honey with one to two tablespoons of either an avocado or egg yolk. Rich in proteins, both avocado and egg yolks will give your hair the keratin protein bonds back that the UV rays have taken out. After shampooing, rub this conditioner into your damp hair once a month, leaving it in for about 20 minutes.

With moist oils that reflect our own natural ones, avocados replenish lost nutrients. Mix half of a mushed up avocado with one to two tablespoons of sour cream or mayonnaise. These ingredients are extra hydrating and give your locks its needed moisture. Use this conditioner every two weeks, leaving it in your hair for 15 minutes, then rinse it out with warm water.

Coconut oil lubricates the hair shaft. In a double boiler, warm 1 to 2 tablespoons of coconut oil to 100 degrees. If you’d like to add a nice scent to the conditioner, mix in a few drops of your favorite essential oil. Rub the mixture into your scalp and pull it through the rest of your hair. Use a shower cap to contain the heat and leave the treatment on for an hour. Rinse out with warm water and wash with shampoo.

Yogurt has natural milk proteins, which strengthens your hair. Mix half a cup of plain yogurt with half a cup of mayonnaise and egg whites from one egg. You can use vanilla yogurt if desired for a nicer scent. Apply all over your hair with extra attention to your tips. Put on a shower cap and leave it in for 30 minutes. Rinse out with warm water and shampoo to reveal your shiny, soft, healthy hair.
