Which Style Jeans Go With a Long Cardigan?

If you’re like many women, you have at least one long-hem cardigan hanging in your closet along with a variety of cute and comfortable jeans. Whether you’re off to work, heading to class or just enjoying a day around town, there’s a jeans and long-cardigan combo to suit the occasion. Pair yours together with a few key accessories for an easy, wearable look.

Skinny and Cool

Pair an oversize cardigan with skinny jeans to bring balance to your outfit. The volume of the cardigan goes well with the fitted style of pant, and the sweater's longer hem is good for covering your backside. For a simple look, wear medium-wash skinnies, a white tee and a neutral-toned cardi -- think black, gray, oatmeal or olive green -- and finish with black moto-style boots. Dress up the look a bit by adding a colorful scarf and swapping the boots for ballet flats, or ratchet up the cool factor by wearing a cropped leather jacket over a long, thin-knit cardigan sweater.

Straight and Polished

Turn your jeans and long cardigan into a professional work look by opting for a straight-leg style. The streamlined cut of the jeans pairs well with this cardigan style to create a long, lean look. Start with dark-wash denim and a silky ivory button-down blouse. Top with a light or medium-knit cardi in a pretty color, like blush or burgundy, and add a skinny belt in espresso brown or black for extra polish. Complete the look with a pair of matching leather pumps, understated gold jewelry and a neutral-colored satchel.

Bootcut and Casual

Bootcut jeans are considered the most universally flattering style, as they work for curvy, thin, tall and petite bodies equally well. Pair your bootcut jeans with a chunky-knit cardigan in a bold color or fun print for a casual day of errand running. For example, wear medium-blue jeans with a black tank and bright red cardi, or try a white tee topped with a tribal zig-zag print. Slip on low-heeled ankle boots or canvas sneakers for a laid-back vibe.

Flared and Bohemian

Light-wash, flare-leg jeans with a mid-to-high rise exude bohemian glam when worn with a long-hem, fringed cardi. Keep the color palette soft and earthy by topping a white tee with a cream, gray, caramel or pastel knit sweater. Bring in color with accessories like chunky bracelets, a tassle or long, lariat necklace or a colorful hippie-chic headscarf. Chunky, open-toe suede wedge booties or wood clogs complete the 1970s homage.
