Skin Care Tips For After a Bikini Wax

Waxing your bikini line can help ensure it stays soft and smooth for as long as 3-4 weeks, according to Ettia Tal, owner of Ettia Holistic Day Spa in NYC. While a hair and bump-free bikini line can be worth any discomfort from the waxing procedure, your bikini line needs special care after the waxing session. By knowing what to avoid and soothing your skin with essential oils and moisturizers, you can minimize irritation and help keep your bikini line hair-free for as long as possible.

Soothing Irritated Skin

Avoid redness and irritation and soothe discomfort by pampering your skin and making wise clothing choices. Apply hot or cold compresses after waxing to help alleviate pain and soreness. Refrain from using shower gels, body lotions or moisturizers on your skin for 24 hours after the waxing session and bathe or shower in lukewarm water to avoid irritating your sensitive skin. Cindy Barshop, expert waxer and owner of the Completely Bare chain of salons, suggests wearing loose cotton clothing after waxing and applying ice to the area to eliminate pain and redness. She also recommends applying aloe vera onto the area; you can get aloe directly from a plant by breaking off a leaf and squeezing the juice onto the area or buy it commercially in most pharmacies. Dee Smith, an aesthetician in England and owner of the Favela Shop, suggests soothing sore skin with tea tree or lavender essential oils; try sprinkling a few drops onto a warm washcloth and allowing it to sit on the irritated area.

Things to Avoid

Use sunscreen regularly and skip hot baths, showers, sexual activity and heavy exercise directly after bikini waxes to help avoid irritation and hyper-pigmentation. Since waxing often leads to enlarged pores in the bikini area, avoiding friction from sex and strenuous exercise as well as limiting or avoiding hot baths/showers for 10 hours after the waxing session can help you avoid irritation and infection in the vulnerable area. Waxing makes your skin more susceptible to hyper-pigmentation, a permanent darkening of the skin, so you will want to wear sunscreen when exposing your bikini area to sunlight.

Keeping the Area Smooth

Prevent ingrown hairs and keep your bikini area smooth for as long as possible by exfoliating and moisturizing regularly. Avoid using any type of exfoliators for 4 days after waxing to minimize irritation. Regular exfoliation, removing the top layer of dead skin cells helps avoid ingrown hairs, in which the waxed hairs return and curl back into the skin. It will also help keep your skin smooth and silky. Smith suggests using a moisturizer that claims to minimize re-growth, such as Bliss Get Out of Hair! or Keri Moisture Therapy Shave Minimizing Lotion.
