United States Marines are held to high standards whether they are in combat or attending a formal event. Their uniforms -- dress blues for formal wear -- have details that promote the legacy of the Corps.

Buttons on the Marines' jackets feature an eagle and anchor that have been part of the uniform since 1804. This is the oldest military insignia still in use.

The stripe down the leg of each trouser worn by noncommissioned officers, staff noncommissioned officers and officers is referred to as the "blood stripe." The solid red stripe was added to the uniform in 1849. Today the stripe honors fallen Marines.

Today's dress blues have a collar that reflects the collar on Marines who fought in the American Revolution. This collar has a high leather neck to protect Marines' necks from swords.
