People who love the flavor of fresh vegetables may only need a little salt and pepper to be happy with a serving of peas and carrots. The frozen food staple, however, often gets a bad rap for being bland and unappealing. Boost the flavor of peas and carrots with a few simple ingredients, and get your family excited about eating them.
Broth Instead of Water
Use premade broth, instead of water, to simmer peas and carrots. Pour as much broth in the pan as you would water, bring the peas and carrots to a boil, then lower the fire. Cover the pan and leave the dish to simmer until the broth cooks down, and until the peas and carrots are tender and have absorbed the broth flavor. Simmering time depends on whether you use canned, frozen, or fresh peas and carrots. Sprinkle on fresh chopped herbs, such as basil, parsley and dill.
Salt and Powders
Garlic powder and onion powder are quick and simple flavor enhancers for peas and carrots. Simmer the peas and carrots on the stove or in the microwave with a bit of water. After they're done, add a pat of butter -- or olive oil as a healthy alternative -- a pinch of salt, and a sprinkle of onion powder, garlic powder or both. Taste the dish as you sprinkle and add more as desired.
