Easy Bruising of Thin Skin

All of us bruise from time to time. It is a normal and natural way for the body to react to a variety of factors. Bruising happens when damage of the blood vessels occurs. When a vein, artery or capillary is torn or cut, blood flows out into the vessel's surroundings. If the escaped blood is contained within the tissues directly under the skin, you see a bruise. Sometimes bruising happens too frequently and that is often caused by thin skin, which accelerates the bruising process.

Causes of Thin Skin

With age, your skin becomes thinner and loses some of the protective fatty layer that helps cushion your blood vessels against injury. The lining of blood vessels and capillaries becomes weaker, and skin becomes thin. Skin bruising is common in the elderly and can often be readily seen on forearms. Leg bruising is also common. Excessive exposure to the sun accelerates the aging process in the skin.

Thin Skin as a Result of Medications

Several medications can thin your skin. If this is the case, don't stop taking your medications if you experience increased bruising. Talk to your doctor about your concerns and ask what you should do.

Preventive Measures

thinning skin is a natural part of aging but steps can be taken to reduce the process. Hydration is key. Not necessarily in lotions, which may have adverse effects, but with plenty of water intake. Consistent exercise helps also as weight fluctuations can lead to thinner skin. Avoid smoking as it has been known to thin skin in the face area.

Emu Oil

Emu oil has been shown to help those with excessive bruising due to thin skin. Treat bruising with emu oil twice a day and a nonstick bandage. The bandage is used to prevent further bruising. Be patient as it can take up four days to show major signs of improvement.

Natural Remedies

A number of natural substances might be helpful for easy bruising, including citrus bioflavonoids and vitamin C. Citrus bioflavonoids (or flavonoids) are plant substances that bring color to many fruits and vegetables. Two types of natural compounds related to bioflavonoids have also shown promise for decreasing the tendency to bruise. Vitamin C is essential for healthy collagen. Marginal vitamin C deficiency is not rare and might lead to increased risk of bruising due to thin skin.
