The right cleaning products can bring out the beauty in your hardwood floors and help extend their life. To keep your floors clean without potentially hazardous chemicals, choose all-natural homemade cleaners made from vinegar and other household products. Making your own cleaning products keeps toxic chemicals away from kids and pets, and also protects the environment during disposal.

According to ConsumerReports, vinegar acts as a natural disinfect, and can effectively clean your wood floors without causing damage. Pour 1 cup of vinegar into a bucket of hot water, and dip a clean mop into this mixture. Wring your mop completely so it's just damp, then clean your floors to remove dirt and grime. Allow the floor to air dry naturally and repeat as needed.

Castile Soap

Castile soap, which shares properties with olive oil, can be used to clean your wood floors and add shine. Green American recommends adding 1/4 cup castile soap and 1/2 cup white vinegar or lemon juice to a bucket of warm water. Damp mop your floors or add this mixture to a clean spray bottle. Spray the castile soap solution onto your wood floors and then use a dry mop to clean and polish the floors. Rinse the wood with a damp mop, as needed, to remove remaining dirt or cleaning products.

Vegetable Oil

All-natural household products not only clean your floors, but also restore their luster. EarthEasy recommends mixing vegetable oil and vinegar in a 1 to 1 ratio in a bowl or bucket. Dip a clean rag or sponge into the solution and apply it to the floor. Work the mixture into the wood, then use a clean rag to wipe away excess solution. Clean your floor thoroughly and allow it to dry before applying this product.

Washing Soda

Washing soda, formally known as mineral sodium bicarbonate, provides an eco-friendly alternative to chemical cleaners for use on painted wood floors. EarthEasy suggests mixing 1 tsp. of washing soda with 1 gallon of hot water in a clean bucket. Dip your mop into this solution and wring it to remove excess water. Apply the mop to your floor and scrub away dirt, grease and dust. Rinse with a clean, damp mop to remove excess cleaner and allow to air dry.
