How to Wash a Dirty White Coat

A white coat can provide a crisp, clean look to any style. A dingy white coat, on the other hand, can translate to a dirty, disheveled look. Cleaning a white coat should be done with a few considerations, but is easy to do with some natural treatments and a little work.

Step 1

Mix together 2 tablespoons of white vinegar with 3 tablespoons of baking soda to make a thick paste. Apply the paste to any heavily stained areas, brushing it in with a clean toothbrush. Work the stain treatment deep into the heavy fibers of the coat. Common areas where stains can accumulate on white coats are the armpits, collar and front, so treat as needed in these areas.

Step 2

Let the paste set for an hour, preferably in direct sunlight. Wash the white coat as directed by the label. During the rinse cycle, add ½ cup of vinegar and ½ cup of all-natural lemon juice. Vinegar will help keep white from dulling as the soap is rinsed away, while lemon juice will help make your jacket brighter.

Step 3

Hang the coat in direct sunlight to dry. This will freshen your white coat and help to brighten it. If time is an issue, dry using the highest heat that the label directs.
