Khaki pants can be a powerhouse in any woman's wardrobe. Their neutral color allows them to match virtually any other color, and their tailored appearance lets them to transition from polished office attire to relaxed weekend wear. The key to making these transitions, though, is the top that you pair with your khakis. Take a quick look through your closet and you'll find plenty of shirts and blouses that can work with the pants, appropriate for any look you're going for.
Keep It Classic
When it comes to casual tops, you can’t beat a classic T-shirt – especially when you’re wearing khakis. A basic cotton V- or scoop neck tee has a relaxed look that works well even with a tailored pair of khakis. Create a low-key look for the weekend with your khakis by pairing them with a white T-shirt and tennis shoes or ballet flats. Because khakis are a neutral, you can wear with them virtually any color without having to worry about clashing - choose a tee in a bright shade like red, hot pink, lime or turquoise. In warmer weather, a tank top can work in place of a T-shirt.
Go Polished
If you work in a casual office setting, khakis can serve as work wear. Give them a more polished look by pairing them with a button-down top and pumps or ankle boots. With a fitted, tailored top, you can leave the button-down untucked. If it’s a longer style, though, tuck the shirt into your khakis for the neatest, most professional look. A traditional white button-down blouse is a safe option, but you can give your outfit a little more personality by choosing another color. In the spring and summer, a button-down in a pastel color like pink, peach, lilac or mint is an attractive option with your khakis. If the fall and winter, go with a richer shade for your top like cobalt, cranberry or emerald.
Stay Warm
In cold weather, keep warm by pairing your khakis with a cozy sweater. A slim-fitting cashmere or cable-knit sweater with a V-neck is a flattering option, though your khakis can also work well with a cowl or turtleneck sweater. If you like a layered look, wear a cardigan sweater with your pants. You can opt for a set that features a matching shell and cardigan, or you can wear your sweater over a camisole or T-shirt.
Make a Statement
Since khakis have a basic look, they’re the ideal pants to wear with a statement top – just make sure it’s in a casual material like cotton or linen to match the style of the pants. You can pair the khakis with a t-shirt, tunic or blouse in a bold pattern like stripes, plaid, polka dots or a floral design. Khakis can also work well with tops that feature decorative details like lace, ruffles or a bow-tie neckline. If you’re wearing skinny or capri khakis, a peasant blouse or tunic with embroidered detail is also a striking option.
