How to Style Women's Polos

Polo shirts may conjure up images of the golf course or stuffy preppy wardrobes, but they are actually more versatile than that. The key to wearing a polo is pairing it with items that give it a more modern, feminine feel -- which means you may want to ditch the khakis and sneakers. Instead, get creative and combine it with unexpected pieces that showcase your curves.

Button It Up

Wearing a polo with the top few buttons undone can make you look like you just stepped off the golf course. Button it all the way up for a fresh, polished look. Wear it with a pair of flirty scalloped shorts or a swingy floral print skirt to give your outfit a more playful feel. Add a more contemporary feel by tucking your polo into your shorts or skirt.

Sexy Pieces

A polo shirt that is boxy and loose can totally hide your curves and give your outfit a masculine vibe. To balance the look of a more shapeless polo, wear it with pieces that offer some sex appeal. A fitted pencil skirt may be the ideal companion to your polo when you want to look flirty and polished. Wear a polo with skinny jeans, particularly in a bold color like cobalt or red. Ditch your flats in favor of wedges or heels to up the sexy quotient of your polo outfit.

Layer It

Wear a polo shirt as a layering piece. For a casual look, wear it under a fitted denim or corduroy jacket. For a more polished look, wear it under a blazer at the office. Wear a polo instead of a button-down blouse under a crew neck sweater so the collar peeks over the neckline. The layering look also works in reverse – wear a stripped polo over a solid waffle knit long sleeve tee for a sporty look.

Add Jewelry

While a polo has a casual feel, that doesn’t mean you can’t pair it with statement accessories that give it some contemporary flair. Button it up and wear a colorful bib style necklace, or layer several strands of beads over it. If you’re wearing your polo unbuttoned, a long pendant style necklace may be a better option. Bold earrings can also help make a polo look more modern – pull your hair up and wear a pair of chandelier or hoop earrings to spice up your look. Even an armful of bangle bracelets can give your polo more of a contemporary feel.
