Under eye bags, a swelling or puffiness under the eyes, are common among men--and women--with age. As you get older, the tissue and muscles around your eyes weaken, fat around your eyes moves to the lower lids, and fluid accumulates below your eyes, all adding to the puffy appearance. Other contributing factors include genetics, lack of sleep, allergies and overworked eye muscles. Thankfully, you can reduce the appearance of under eye bags with natural at-home remedies and lifestyle changes.
Applying a cold compress over your eyes can temporarily reduce under eye puffiness. When used twice a day, they may even slow down the stretching of under eye skin, preventing larger under eye bags from forming in the first place. Dampen a clean washcloth with cool water and place over your eyes, using light pressure, for 10 to 15 minutes--or until puffiness begins to reduce. You can also freeze two cucumber slices for 30 minutes and place over closed eyes for 15 minutes to reduce puffiness and swelling.
Warm Tea Bags
Black and green tea bags placed over your eyes can reduce the appearance of under eye bags because they contain natural astringents called tannins that temporarily reduce under eye swelling by constricting blood vessels around the eyes. Steep two black or green tea bags in boiling water for three to five minutes, allowing them to cool before wrapping each tea bag in tissue. Lie down and place tea bags over closed eyes for 5 to 15 minutes.
Improve Your Sleeping Habits
Aim for seven to eight hours of sleep every night, keep to a regular sleep schedule and avoid late nights to prevent the formation of larger under eye bags. Although getting enough sleep will only reduce the appearance of under bag eyes rather than get rid of them completely, lack of sleep will worsen their appearance and may result in dark circles on top of under eye puffiness. You should also sleep with your head slightly raised to prevent fluid retention under your eyes. Keep your head elevated by sleeping on an extra pillow, propping up the head of your mattress or raising the entire head of your bed a couple of inches.
Drink at least six to eight glasses of water a day and eat plenty of fruits and vegetables to stay well hydrated in order to reduce fluid retention that results in under eye bags. Drinking plenty of water and regularly eating fruits that contain high amounts of water, such as oranges and watermelons, will also help your body flush out harmful toxins that can cause under eye puffiness.
Avoid Foods and Beverages that Cause Fluid Retention
A variety of foods and beverages cause fluid retention that can make under eye bags worse. Sodium is a leading culprit, so reduce your sodium intake to no more than 1,000 to 2,000 mg a day and avoid salty foods, such as processed and fried foods. You should also avoid or reduce your consumption of alcohol, carbonated drinks and beverages containing caffeine, all of which cause fluid retention.
