How to Make a White Streak in Your Hair

by Sarah Metzker Erdemir

Whether you’re dressing up your hair for a Halloween costume or you just want to make an interesting change to your hair, making a white streak in your hair is a fun way to do something different. For a permanent white streak in darker hair, you might want to experiment with different kinds of home bleaching products. If you're not sure how you'll like having a white streak, use white shoe polish or temporary white gel to see how it will look. This is also a good way to practice to get the streak just the way you want it. If you're just looking for temporary coloring for a costume, you can wash out the shoe polish or white gel when the party’s over. This article shows you how to make a temporary white streak.

Items you will need

  • Shampoo
  • Tin foil
  • Scissors
  • Comb
  • Hair clip
  • Liquid white shoe polish
  • White hair gel
  • Old toothbrush
Step 1

Wash and dry your hair thoroughly before applying any dye, as the dye will stay better on clean hair.

Step 2

Style your hair as desired. Combing or attempting to style the white streak will cause the color to flake off.

Step 3

Cut the tin foil into one-inch squares. If you're dyeing longer hair, make the squares an inch or two bigger.

Step 4

Choose the piece of hair you want to color and separate it with a comb. If you don’t have a friend to help you make the streak, use a hair clip to hold the hair.

Step 5

Use an old toothbrush to apply colored gel or liquid shoe polish. Dip the toothbrush into the dye and brush it into a small section of your selected hair, starting at the roots. Be careful not to get any dye on your scalp. Brush the dye onto one small section at a time, keeping the hair as flat as possible. As you go, wrap each section in foil to keep it flat and to keep the dye from getting onto the rest of your hair.

Step 6

Let the dye dry for up to a half hour before removing the foil. If needed, gently finger it into place. Touch it as little as possible to prevent the dye from flaking out.

Tips

  • Wash your hair with warm water and shampoo to remove the white streak.
