Hazelnuts are a delicious nut that can be used in a variety of recipes from soups to tortes and cakes. The hazelnut flavor adds depth and a unique taste to all foods. Grinding hazelnuts, however, is not so easy and should be done in a special nut grinder called a nut mill, according to The Cook's Thesaurus. The nut mill will ensure that the nuts stay the right consistency instead of turning into a butter, which is a common mishap when using a food processor.
Toast your hazelnuts. This can easily be done, according to Epicurious, by baking hazelnuts on a baking sheet for 10 to 15 minutes in a 350 degree Fahrenheit oven.
Rub skins off hazelnuts. Do this by gently rubbing hazelnuts in a towel after toasting.
Grind the hazelnuts in a nut mill thoroughly to a consistency that is the same as cornmeal. Do this by pouring the whole hazelnuts into the top of the nut mill and cranking the hand crank around many times. The ground nuts will fall through the grate into the bottom portion of the nut mill and at this point they should be the correct consistency. You can place the ground hazelnuts in the top again if they are not the right consistency.
