Odwalla Superfood Ingredients

Superfoods give you the most nutritional bang for your buck. Odwalla is a brand name of smoothie-type drinks, juices and bars, some of which contain these so-called superfoods. Many of the items in these products are nutritious and supply key vitamins and minerals.

What Does Superfood Even Mean?

The generic definition of a superfood is one that contains essential nutrients that support good health. Superfoods also contain antioxidants and other beneficial compounds that help protect you from disease. In the context of Odwalla, the superfood products are ones that contain nutrient-dense ingredients without a large amount of added sugars or preservatives.

Fruits are Fantastic

The Odwalla Superfood drink contains several types of fruit including mango, apple, banana, peaches and strawberries. These fruits contribute 550 milligrams of potassium, which is about 12 percent of the 4,700 milligrams adults need each day. The fruit in the drink supplies 2 grams of fiber, as well, which is 8 percent of the 25 grams women need each day and 5 percent of the 38 grams men require daily. The Odwalla Superfood bar contains dates, bananas and raisins. These fruits contribute to the 3 grams of fiber in the bar and the 270 milligrams of potassium.

Super Spirulina

Both the Odwalla Superfood drink and bar contain spirulina, which is a type of seaweed that contributes several nutrients, such as iodine, to the products. For example, the drink contains 30 percent of the iodine you need for the day. Iodine promotes normal function of the thyroid. Spirulina is also a good source of iron, and contributes to the 10 percent daily value in the drink and the 15 percent daily value in the bar.

Odwalla Products and Your Diet

While the Odwalla Superfood drink doesn't contain any added sugar and the bar doesn't contain a lot of added sugar, it's wise to look at the big picture before including them in your diet. The bar, for example, contains 10 percent of your daily saturated fat limit, and too much saturated fat can raise your cholesterol levels. When you do have an Odwalla Superfood bar, pay attention to the other foods you eat during the day so you don't go overboard on saturated fat. While the drink contains fruit, don't use it to replace whole fruit in your diet. Whole fruit is a better source of dietary fiber than the drink. If you were to eat the same amount of fruit the drink contains in whole form, you'd get far more than the 2 grams of fiber in the drink.
