Body brushing is a skin rejuvenating technique in which individuals lightly rub a brush over their skin. The body brush is similar to a hair brush, but the bristles are softer so as not to damage the skin. Brushing is performed once or twice per day on dry skin -- and brush strokes should only be towards the direction of the heart, according to the Huffington Post. Body brushing provides both external and internal benefits to the body.

The most obvious benefit of the body brush is the removal of dead skin cells from the body, thus providing a fresher complexion and tighter skin tone. Those with dry skin benefit from increased moisture as the brush stimulates sweat and oil glands. It can also improve skin texture on extra dry areas like the elbows, knees and ankles. With regard to skin tone, some dry brushers see a reduction in the appearance of cellulite; however, there is no definitive scientific evidence on these toning benefits and the results are often temporary, reports "Shape" magazine. Internally, brushing stimulates blood flow to the digestive system and lymphatic system, which helps to remove toxins from the body.
