Other than a pair of jeans, few things are as multi-purpose as a well-cut pair of navy blue shorts. The shade functions as a neutral, making it easy to coordinate. The versatile hue allows you to dress up your shorts with a blazer, or dress them down with fun colors and prints for maximum styling options.

Navigating Nautical

One look at a tailored pair of navy shorts and the marina starts to call. Embrace the nautical trend by paring your shorts with a variety of sailing-inspired pieces in a palette of white, red, navy and gold. Try wearing navy shorts with a simple white-and-red-striped boatneck shirt and gold ballet flats, or opt for a red sweater with a white collar peeking out and rolled up sleeves. Finish this look with tan espadrille-style wedges or a T-strap sandal and an oversized navy canvas tote bag.

Nice in Neutrals

Navy takes on a sophisticated vibe when worn with neutral pieces. Try a simple white T-shirt, a long-sleeved ivory peasant blouse or a sheer, fitted beige shirt with neutral ballet flats or a chunky wood heel. Or, break conventional style rules by wearing your choice of a black tank, silky V-neck top or button-down blouse with metallic accessories. Black and navy together is an on-trend look when the navy is light enough to contrast and not blend. For the best of both worlds, wear navy shorts, a white cami and a fitted black blazer. Finish the look with pointed-toe leather wedges or black booties.

Chic Chambray

The denim-on-denim look gets a slight twist by pairing a sleek pair of navy shorts with a button-down, light-blue shirt. Roll up the sleeves, tuck in the top and add a neutral-hued belt and pair of. Then, pile on the jewelry -- an armful of colorful bangles pops against the all-blue background. For a variation on this look, opt for a white tank under. Leave the chambray layer on top unbuttoned to show off a funky Y-shaped necklace.

Cool Colors, Pretty Prints

Because the color functions as a neutral, navy bottoms beautifully offset a variety of prints. Try vibrant plaids, soft florals or intense tribal patterns -- just be sure to keep your footwear and accessories neutral. Similarly, wearing navy shorts with a bright color on top -- think orange or fuchsia -- is a striking look, but requires the introduction of a tan belt and shoes or a white or black blazer to help keep the appearance balanced.
