Hot flashes happen most frequently to women beginning and going through menopause. They are caused by a rapid rise and fall in body temperature associated with the hormonal imbalance that is experienced during this stage of life. Coconut oil may be one way to naturally control hot flashes and assist with their demise. While this oil may be beneficial, it should not be considered a cure for this imbalance. Talk with your doctor before taking coconut oil for hot flashes.
History
The coconut has long been used in traditional medicine by Pacific Islanders, which consider it to be extremely powerful for healing various ailments. Although little research has been done in the United States regarding the healing properties of coconut oil, it is used in alternative medicine for a number of reasons.
Signs and Symptoms
There are several signs and symptoms associated with hot flashes. According to MayoClinic.com, you may experience radiating heat beginning in your upper body, a flush appearance and perspiration. You may find that you have a variation of these symptoms while you are having a hot flash as they differ from person to person. If you have any of these symptoms, talk to your physician as he may be able to assist you in reducing their effect.
Treatment
Bruce Bair, writing for Female Menopause Mentors, says incorporating 1 to 2 tbsp. of coconut oil into your daily diet may reduce hot flashes. While this may be true, little research has been done on coconut oil's purported benefits for hot flashes and menopause.
Benefits
Coconut oil has the benefit of being a natural oil. Using it to help treat hot flashes could provide significant relief. Discuss the best type of coconut oil for your symptoms with your physician. Do not consider this oil to be a cure for any ailments including hot flashes. It should not be used as a replacement for modern medical treatment.
Warnings
If you experience symptoms such as weakness, fatigue, faintness or dizziness consult your doctor. While not common, they should be discussed with your health care provider. Hot flashes vary in frequency and each women experiences them differently. Coconut oil may be helpful in relieving several of the symptoms associated with hot flashes; however, if you are allergic to coconut or any of its byproducts, do not use it for any purpose.
