Cellulite occurs mostly in women, according to the Mayo Clinic, and appears as lumpy skin on the thighs, legs and other fatty areas of the body. Cellulite becomes more noticeable with age and weight gain, when the honeycomb-shaped connective cords that connect skin and muscle must stretch against more layers of fat. Spider veins also occur mostly on the legs, although they are associated more with standing or sitting in the same position for too long and do not have any impact on weight gain. Both ailments can be solved either at home or with the help of a doctor.
Wear compression stockings. Compression stockings are doctor-recommended for reducing the appearance of spider veins on the legs. You can purchase compression stockings at your local drugstore, and wearing them for several hours a day will redirect blood flow and prevent the appearance of more spider veins.
Lose weight. Cellulite will become less apparent as you build muscle and lose fat, states the Mayo Clinic. Eat foods that are high in lean protein and avoid saturated fats as much as possible. Amp up your exercise routine to burn those calories, which will also prevent more spider veins from reoccurring due to inactivity.
Get laser treatments. In 2004, Tri-Active laser treatments were approved by the FDA to increase collagen production in the skin, temporarily reducing the appearance of cellulite. According to the Mayo Clinic, laser treatments are also used to close off spider veins, which will make them less noticeable and reduce any pain associated with the condition.
Consider sclerotherapy. Sclerotherapy is a treatment for spider veins in which a doctor injects a liquid that closes the spider veins, making them unusable and also reduce their appearance. Sclerotherapy isn't always permanent and may need to be administered several times.
Avoid using creams for cellulite or spider veins. According to the Mayo Clinic, the creams available on the market to treat spider veins and cellulite are not proven effective, nor are they approved by the FDA. Save your money and don't be tempted to buy these creams.
