Scarves do more than just protect your skin in icy weather. They also add eye-catching color to an outfit when draped over your shoulders or tied around your neck. If you own an acrylic and viscose scarf, you'll need to wash it occasionally to keep dirt and grime from building up. Viscose, also known as rayon, is more delicate than acrylic. Machine washing may damage the sensitive fibers, so it's better to clean a viscose and acrylic scarf by hand.
Fill a sink halfway with lukewarm water. Never use hot or ice-cold water to clean a viscose scarf.
Add a few drops of gentle liquid detergent to the water. Stir the soap and water together with your hand.
Submerge the acrylic and viscose scarf in the soapy water. Allow the water to penetrate the scarf.
Swish the scarf around gently with your hands. Do not twist the scarf while washing it because doing so may rip the fabric.
Drain the soapy water, then turn on the faucet and rinse the scarf with lukewarm water. Continue rinsing until the water runs clear.
Lay a towel flat on a table or other hard surface. Place the scarf flat on the towel.
Wrap the towel loosely around the scarf and apply gentle pressure to soak up the water. Do not wring or squeeze the scarf to get the water out.
Lay the scarf out on another dry towel and allow it to air-dry completely.
- Check the label on your scarf for the manufacturer's care instructions.
- Do not wash more than one scarf at a time in the same water. Doing this may cause the colors to bleed together.
- Avoid hanging your scarf up to dry, as this can make it lose its shape.
