Those who tend to suffer of dry mouth know how uncomfortable it can be to feel constantly dehydrated. While many sufferers carry water with them at all times, others must take special care to make sure the products they are using at home do not contain ingredients that contribute to their condition. Mouthwashes, especially, should be free of alcohol or ingredients containing caffeine.
Minty Fresh Mouthwash
Minty mouthwash is great for those who frequently suffer from dry mouth. The recipe does not include alcohol, which is typically a drying agent.
Gather 2 1/2 cups of mineral water (or distilled, if you prefer), 1 tsp. of fresh mint leaves (peppermint, spearmint or both), 1 tsp. of rosemary leaves and 1 tsp. of anise seeds.
Place the water in a pot and bring it to a boil. Place the herbs and seeds into the water, remove the water from the heat, cover the pot and allow the herbs to infuse in the water for at least 20 minutes. After the water cools, strain the herbs out of the water and place the water in a safe container for bathroom storage. This mouthwash should last a few days.
You can make a larger quantity by doubling or tripling the recipe. If you do, add 1 tsp. of myrrh tincture to the mixture to act as a natural preservative.
Lemon Mouthwash
Lemon, as well as other citrus fruits, has great antiseptic properties. This mouthwash recipe is also free of drying alcohols, is easy to make and is a great alternative for those who suffer from dry mouth.
Gather 1 cup of water, 1/2 cup of plain seltzer or soda water, 1 tsp. of aloe vera gel, 4 drops of vegetable glycerine and 10 drops of lemon essential oil.
Pour all of the ingredients into a plastic or glass bottle and shake until they are well blended. Use the mouthwash to rinse or gargle once or twice a day.
Baking Soda Mouthwash
Baking soda and salt are known for their cleansing abilities, and this mouthwash is bound to make your mouth feel fresh as well as clean.
Gather 2 ounces of water, 1/4 tsp. of either sea salt or baking soda, 1 drop of tea tree oil, and 1 drop of peppermint oil. Mix all of the ingredients together in a small bowl and use as a rinse or gargle.
You can mix a larger quantity of this solution and store it on a bottle, but should not store this particular mixture for more than a day or two because it has no preservatives.
