What Kind of Shoes Look Best With a Miniskirt?

Just like a great pair of jeans, a miniskirt can be dressed up or down and worn in a variety of contexts. What you choose to wear on top -- as well as the kind of look you wish to create -- should influence what shoes you select. From casual canvas sneakers to high-heeled pumps, the best footwear with miniskirts is as varied as the women who wear them.

Cute & Casual

If you’re searching for a quick and easy outfit for grabbing lunch with friends or running weekend errands, a casual miniskirt with a soft V-neck tee certainly fits the bill. With this type of laid-back look, a pair of canvas slip-on sneakers in a neutral hue -- think white, black or cream -- is a cute and comfortable footwear choice. During warmer months, a flat T-strap or gladiator-style sandal pairs well with a brightly colored mini.

Boots & Booties

Miniskirts and boots make for a stylish combination -- but when deciding which pair to choose, both the heel and boot heights must be considered. As a general rule, thigh- or knee-high stiletto boots should be avoided as the look errs on the side of overly provocative. However, a knee-high boot with a chunky heel -- especially a slouchy style over tights -- is both fashion-forward and appropriate. If you’re looking for a more casual approach, opt for a pair of flat mid-calf motorcycle boots with buckles, or dress up your look by pairing a silk miniskirt with sheer hosiery and low-cut suede booties.

Middle Of The Road

Sometimes you want an outfit that falls right in between casual and dressy. When this is the case, rock your mini with a trendy wedge or sweet ballet flats. Pair a pleated miniskirt with a silky tank top and leather ballet flats for a spot-on look for Sunday brunch, or put on your best colorful or printed mini with a pair of neutral espadrille-style wedges. This trendy look will not only take you from shopping to dinner, but you’ll have the added bonus of elongating your legs.

Dressy Glam

While miniskirts may be short on length, they’re long on glam -- that is, when dressed up the right way. A mini in lace, silk or another delicate fabric takes on an evening feel when worn with a pretty tie-front blouse and tasteful jewelry. Pair such a look with a pair of patent-leather pumps or a high, chunky suede heel. If the event is conservative, consider pairing your pumps with hosiery; or, add a little edge to your dressy ensemble with a pair of nude or black cage-style four-inch sandals and metallic accessories.
