How to Get Gum Out of Clothes

by Giselle Mazur ; Updated September 28, 2017

Kids love to chew gum, and it's a treat you might let them enjoy now and then. The trouble is what happens all too often: A wad of gum lands on a shirt or skirt and makes a sticky mess. It's not too difficult to remove the gum, though, if you tackle the blob right away.

Items you will need

  • Vinegar
  • Baking soda
Step 1

Remove the article of clothing and set it somewhere to let the gum dry.

Step 2

Pour vinegar over the gummed area until the area around and under the gum is saturated.

Step 3

Sprinkle baking soda over the gum so that you can’t see the gum.

Step 4

Put the article of clothing in the freezer and wait a couple of hours.

Step 5

Take the article of clothing out of the freezer. Use the tweezers to remove the gum.

Step 6

Wash the clothing as usual.

  • If you can't get all the gum off, try spraying the remaining bits with hairspray to loosen the gum.
