Skip the frozen yogurt shops and make your own at home. Homemade frozen yogurt costs less, tastes fresher and gives you more control over the flavorings than the limited options from a shop. Homemade frozen yogurt has a light and airy consistency similar to ice cream but with the natural tang of yogurt. Another option is to freeze regular yogurt for long term storage. This will not affect the texture, but the flavor will become slightly more tart the longer it remains frozen, according to the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service.
Freeze Yogurt for Long Term Storage
Fill plastic resealable freezer containers with yogurt up to one inch below the top.
Cover the containers and place in the freezer.
Store unsweetened yogurt in the freezer for up to one month. Flavored yogurt can remain frozen for up to five months.
Transfer the containers of yogurt to the refrigerator 12 to 24 hours before you intend to use them to thaw. Avoid thawing on the countertop.
Stir the thawed yogurt before eating.
Make Homemade Frozen Yogurt Dessert
Combine 2 1/2 cups unsweetened plain yogurt with the optional diced fresh fruit and sugar or honey.
Refrigerate this mixture for two hours.
Pour the frozen yogurt base into the drum of an ice cream freezer.
Freeze the yogurt according to the manufacturer's directions for churning ice cream.
Serve the frozen yogurt as a dessert or store in the freezer in sealed freezer containers for up to one month.
