Believe it or not, eyebrows are undoubtedly the most important feature on your face. The right brow shape can completely transform your look, so we tapped celebrity makeup artist and beauty expert Tracy O'Connor for her insider tips and tricks of the trade. Check out her pro pointers to make sure your look shapes up!
Model Natalia Vodianova masters the art of the “no-makeup” makeup look. O’Connor breaks down this look and tells us why it works: “The lip color is very sheer and just a shade darker than her natural color. The brows are full, but light in color and groomed. What brings her look to life and adds dimension to her face without bold color, is the subtle sweep of bronzer along the hairline and cheeks.”
Kate’s look is soft, feminine and keeps the focus on the eyes. “To achieve this look, it’s important to perfect the skin first. Choose a liquid foundation with great coverage and light-reflecting qualities to give the appearance of flawless, creamy skin. Complete the angelic look by choosing a nude lip color and a hint of blush just a shade darker than your skin tone. A confident stroke of black liquid liner on the eyes completes the look.
Brooke is known for her thick, full brows – and there is no exception here. Because her brows have so much volume, she’s balanced their fullness by also pumping up the volume on her lashes. This way, the brows don’t overwhelm and shrink the eyes. Want to try this at home? Tracy O’Connor explains this look can be yours by applying 6-8 ‘flare’ lashes to each eye and finishing with several coats of black mascara.
Characteristically, Madonna has very dark brows. But here, she’s chosen to lighten them up a little, to just a few shades darker than her hair. “When lightening the brows, it’s important not to go too light. Madonna’s brows are a perfect illustration of how to lighten the brow so they don’t dominate the look, yet maintain definition.”
As the former editor of French Vogue, Carine Roitfeld has an effortlessly cool, edgy look. Her brows are significantly darker and ashier in tone than her hair color, and the distinctive smoky, smudged eye makeup adds intensity. O’Connor says, “If you want to try out this look, but don’t want to commit, get a rich brown mascara and sweep across your brows. This will deepen the color, minus a trip to the hair salon.”
Frieda’s exaggerated side part nicely complements her heart-shaped face and showcases her perfectly arched brows. The rich browns and neutrals used here on her eyes accentuate the warm undertones of her natural features, keeping the look simple, yet glamorous.
Kate looks understatedly elegant and polished here. Warm brown, bronze and gold shadows set off her eyes and skin against her white dress. Her brows have been defined by a soft shadow, leaving her overall look bright and sun-kissed.
Carey’s blonde pixie cut boasts short-fringed bangs, which creates the perfect frame for her delicate features. By creating ample space between the brow and the bangs, her eyes steal the spotlight.
Although Kerry typically wears her hair shorter, the actress switches up her look here wearing it loose with beautiful waves. The movement in her hair draws attention to her gorgeous bone structure and gives her a feminine look. Her shapely defined brow keeps it flirty.
Keira’s chin-length bob and relaxed waves evoke a vintage flapper look, but its imperfect nature and slightly tousled texture keep it modern and fresh. Her brows are full, and rich in color, which adds a bit of drama to her look. According to O’Connor, “this style is best-suited on a heart or oval face shape, rather than a rounder, fuller face shape.”
Eva’s brows have a gorgeous, seductive arch. O’Connor tells us that this look can be achieved by using a highlighting shadow just above and below the brow to accentuate the shape and further define the brow. Don’t forget to choose a shadow that is a shade or two lighter than your skin tone for the most natural look.
Megan’s eyebrows are bold and seductive, thanks to their perfect shape and fullness. Want to copy her look? O’Connor adds expert insight: “To add volume or to create a more dramatic shape and the illusion of a perfect arch, brush the brows upwards. To achieve a similar look choose a warm-toned shadow (one shade lighter than the brow color) and trace the brow line,” she says.
Angelina’s brows are defined, well-groomed, yet soft and stunning. Beauty expert Tracy O’Connor notes that her brows have actually been lightened a shade lighter than her hair. This effect opens the eye area and creates a very feminine appearance. To further enhance and brighten the area, she has added a few ‘flare’ false lashes to the corners of the eyes.
If you are blessed with naturally full brows like Denise, this look is easy to achieve. O’Connor offers these tips: Brush your brows, gently cut any hairs that are unruly, and set with a clear, matte wax. Lip balm or something similar in texture will do the trick. Avoid brow gel as it can leave the brows shiny and unnatural looking.
Dita Von Teese
Dita’s iconic look is 40s glamour girl. “To achieve a similar look, avoid waxing the brow and simply tweeze any stray hairs. The brows are elegant and groomed, yet still natural. You can see they are not penciled on and yet retain a very soft shape. Evocative of Elizabeth Taylor, the striking contrast between her porcelain skin, dark brows and red lip, is classically beautiful,” comments O’Connor.
Camilla’s loose, sexy hair and vibrant outfit take center stage here, while her natural beauty shines through. Her flawless skin, natural lips and defined brows are timeless, while an unexpected pop of colored liner adds a fun, flirtatious and youthful vibe.
Halle’s cropped pixie cut is her signature look. To keep this hairstyle soft and feminine, O’Connor recommends subtly defined brows that are a shade lighter than your hair color. On Halle, her beautiful brows emphasize her flawless bone structure and golden complexion.
Natalie’s full brows have less of an arch than other stars we’ve seen, and are actually evocative of Audrey Hepburn. Here, they are simply brushed, straight in shape and no shadow or pencil has been added. Because the brows are not overly dramatic, the emphasis is on Natalie’s eyes.
