Seasonings for Chicken Thighs

by Lauren Griffin

Chefs who are looking for a protein that is both tasty and economical can rely on chicken thighs. The dark meat of chicken thighs holds more flavor than white meat and is a juicier cut of meat. A number of seasonings add a punch of flavor to chicken thighs and help accentuate the natural flavors of this delicious meat.

Italian Herbs

Italian cuisine relies on a few simple ingredients that add superb flavor to the dishes. For a simple yet delicious way to season chicken thighs, try adding a sprinkle of dried Italian herbs. Along with a pinch of salt and some freshly ground pepper, coat the chicken thighs in fragrant oregano, basil or rosemary. A squeeze of lemon and some garlic powder or minced garlic also employs flavors from the Mediterranean and is well-suited for chicken thighs.

Nothing ends a summer day better than a delicious barbecue. Grill up some chicken thighs that have been seasoned with barbecue sauce. Browse the grocery store and select a pre-made sauce, from a smokey mesquite sauce to one with a spicy habanero kick to a simple classic variety. More adventurous grillers can easily whip up their own barbecue sauce. Try a tequila-lime barbecue sauce that consists of pineapple juice, honey, lime juice and tequila.

Invade your mouth with the flavors of the East by seasoning chicken thighs with Asian-inspired ingredients. A luscious ginger-soy sauce made of ginger preserves, soy sauce and garlic coats the thighs in Asian flavor and goes great with a simple side of steamed rice. Season chicken thighs in an Asian glaze by soaking them in a mixture of soy sauce, rice vinegar, a little honey, dark sesame oil, chili paste and some garlic. For a last-minute Asian seasoning, sprinkle some Chinese five-spice powder onto the chicken thighs before cooking.

Sweet & Spicy

Sweet and spicy seasonings give chicken thighs a burst of complex flavor. Whip up a delicious maple-mustard sauce concocted of spicy brown mustard, a touch of yellow mustard, maple syrup, brown sugar, cider vinegar, soy sauce, minced garlic and grated onion to season the chicken thighs. A similar seasoning created from honey and Dijon mustard also lends a sweet yet sour and zesty flavor to the chicken. Try adding chopped pecans or other nuts, too, for a bit of a crunch.
