Meals Made With Smoked Sausage

by Elizabeth Arnold

Smoked sausage will give recipes a full, rich kick of flavor. Incorporate the meat into your favorite dishes, such as stews and casseroles, or serve it alongside vegetables, rice or pasta. Because many types of smoked sausage are fully cooked, you'll be able to prepare a delicious and filling meal for your family in a matter of minutes.

Chicken and Sausage Gumbo

Smoked sausage gumbo is hearty enough to be a meal in itself. If you love spicy foods, Cajun gumbo will satisfy your craving. You can also adjust the dish's level of spiciness if your child prefers milder flavors. Create the gumbo by making a roux of flour and butter and mixing in sauteed celery, onions, garlic and a variety of savory seasonings, such as cayenne pepper and thyme. To speed up preparation, use dry dressing and seasoning mix for the main spices. Shredded chicken and smoked sausage, such as andouille or kielbasa, give the stew a meaty richness. Serve the gumbo over white rice for a well-rounded meal.

Smoked Sausage Pasta

When you're pressed for time in the kitchen and need a fast and flavorful one-dish meal, make smoked sausage pasta for your family. Cook your favorite type of pasta, such as penne or fusilli, and combine it with browned, sliced smoked sausage. Mixing in a cream-based soup, such as mushroom, along with shredded mozzarella, will give the dish a velvety texture. Add in fresh peas and transfer the mixture to a casserole dish. A fresh garden salad with creamy dressing complements the pasta dish's richness.

Grilled Smoked Sausage

On a warm summer evening, fire up the grill and delight your family with smoked sausage, such as bratwurst or chicken-apple-sage flavored sausage. Serve the sausages in buns topped with all of your favorite fixings, including relish, mustard, ketchup and chopped red onions. Cool, creamy coleslaw and old-fashioned potato salad will put the final touches on the casual meal.

Kielbasa and Cabbage

Nothing complements smoky kielbasa sausage like cabbage and potatoes. When you're looking for a bold and flavorful meal option, make a one-skillet meal by pan-frying sliced kielbasa, halved red potatoes and cabbage wedges. You can customize the dish's flavor by adding chopped onions, a packet of dry dressing and seasoning mix and salt and pepper to taste.
