Make This DIY Soothing Balm to Heal Cracked Heels

by Stephanie Gerber

During warm weather feet take a beating from long days of walking in sandals and flip flops. Our heels often bear the brunt, which can cause painful chapped and cracked areas. Give tired feet a warm foot bath followed by a gentle scrub then lather on this DIY soothing balm to heal cracked heels overnight.

This healing, soothing balm has both shea butter and coconut oil to moisturize and repair skin. We've added honey to hydrate and heal, and lavender for its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory benefits.

Items you will need

  • 2 tablespoons beeswax
  • 4 tablespoons shea butter
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 2 tablespoons dried lavender buds
  • 20 drops lavender essential oil
  • 6-ounce container with lid
  • Measuring spoons
  • Heat-proof measuring cup or bowl
  • Saucepan
  • Fine mesh strainer
Step 1

Measure out the beeswax, shea butter, coconut oil and dried lavender and combine the ingredients in a heat-proof measuring cup or bowl.

Step 2

Bring 2 to 3 inches of water to a boil in a small saucepan. Reduce heat to low. Place the heat-proof cup or bowl in the saucepan and melt the ingredients together. Let the mixture sit in the water bath over low heat for at least 30 minutes to allow the lavender to infuse.

Step 3

Remove the mixture from heat and strain out the lavender with a fine mesh strainer. Immediately pour the liquid mixture into a storage container (it will start to set up quickly). You can also save yourself a bit of cleanup by straining the mixture directly into the jar you plan to store the balm in.

Step 4

Let the balm cool for a minute or two and add 1 tablespoon of honey.

Step 5

Stir the balm to incorporate the honey. Keep stirring as the mixture cools to avoid the honey separating out.

Step 6

Add 20 drops of lavender essential oil and stir again to thoroughly combine all of the ingredients.

Step 7

Apply the balm each night to soften and soothe dry heels. Slip on socks and wear them overnight to lock in the moisture and relieve cracked heels.
