Perhaps you have dull and dry hair. Maybe you even envy those who have thick, lustrous and shiny hair. Making your hair shiny takes effort and care. You can make your hair shiny as a result of your diet, your shampoo and conditioner. You don't have to spend tons of money to get shiny hair, either. You can make your hair shine with simple products from home like strawberries, lemon juice, apple cider vinegar or honey.
Watch your diet. To get shiny hair, include lots of protein in your diet. Also eat foods rich in omega-3 acids like salmon, almonds, avocados, and flaxseed. Increasing the shine in your hair from diet won't happen overnight, but it will happen. It will take at least six months to have an effect on your hair, but it will be a recognizable difference when it happens.
Choose a good conditioner for your hair type, such as normal, dry, color treated, or fine hair. When you put the conditioner in your hair, do not immediately rinse it out. Leave the conditioner on your hair for three to five minutes, and then rinse it out.
Rinse with cool water. Cool water is better for your hair than warm water because it helps to close off the hair follicles. Hot water has a tendency to wash away your hair's natural oils. Rinsing with cool water will also cause some of the conditioner to remain in your hair causing it to continue to work on your hair throughout the day.
Use the right type of water. Hard water can be especially rough on your hair. Soft water is ideal for shiny hair. If you are unsure of the type of water coming into your home, call your local water facility. If you have hard water, you can install a water softening system in your home, or you can put a filter on your shower nozzle that will give you soft water.
Use a comb or boar bristle brush after showering. To remove tangles from your hair, use a wide-toothed comb or a boar bristle brush. The boar bristles are all natural and will help to spread the natural oils throughout your hair, thus creating shiny hair. Avoid plastic or hard bristles, which can cause split ends and dry frizzy hair.
Use a strawberry mask on your hair. Puree eight strawberries to a pulp. Add 1 tbsp. of mayonnaise. Mix together. Massage the mixture into washed hair that is still damp. Cover your hair with a shower cap and a warm towel. Let it sit for a few minutes. Take the towel and shower cap off. Wash and condition your hair again. The mask will make your hair shine.
Use natural ingredients for shinier hair. If you are a blond, you can increase the shine in your hair by adding a few tablespoons of lemon juice to your rinse water. If you have red or brown hair, add a few tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to your rinse water. For any hair type, mix together 1 tsp. of honey into four cups of warm water. After shampooing your hair, pour the mixture through your hair.
- To get the most out of your conditioner, leave it on for three to five minutes. Apply the conditioner before shaving or washing your body. This will give you something to do while the conditioner is setting.
- Avoid brushes with plastic or hard bristles. These bristles can cause split ends and leave you with frizzy, dry hair.
