Make a festive birthday treat by adorning a cake with brightly colored balloons. Rolled fondant is easy to work with and can be purchased in a variety of colors. Cover the cake you're decorating with a layer of fondant to ensure that the balloons adhere properly. Although the cake will be impressively eye-catching, the balloons are relatively simple to make. This colorful confection is the perfect centerpiece for a child's birthday party.
Lay the fondant out on a clean work surface or a sheet of wax paper. If it isn't already rolled flat, roll it out to between 1/4 inch and 1/2 inch thick.
Cut out round pieces of fondant using circular metal cutters.
Brush the backs of the circles with a damp pastry brush, then adhere them to the fondant-covered cake.
Tear off one very small piece of rolled fondant for each balloon. Roll the fondant sections into thin ropes, then brush with a damp pastry brush. Attach the the fondant rope to the fondant circles, arranging them in a wavy fashion to recreate the look of floating balloons.
