Genuine pashminas and faux pashmina shawls warm the shoulders during a chilly night out on the town, especially when worn with a sleeveless or strapless dress. Luxurious genuine pashmina comes from the undercoat of Himalayan goats, sometimes blended with silk or cashmere. Faux pashmina shawls mimic the softness and durability of the genuine fiber but are usually made from acrylic or other synthetic blend. Although a pashmina is, in essence not much more than a long rectangle of fabric, it can make a dress look accessorized and glamorous when worn correctly.
Choose a pashmina in a contrasting color to your dress or a color that picks up one of the colors from the dress's pattern. If you prefer a monochromatic look, take your dress with you to shop for the pashmina so that the color you choose does not clash. Even neutrals like black come in different shades for different fibers and styles.
Locate the approximate center of the pashmina. While wearing your dress, drape the pashmina across your back and over your arms, centering the pashmina between your shoulder blades.
Tie the loose ends of the pashmina that are draped over your arms in a single knot just below the bust line. Adjust the pashmina to cover your shoulders as desired and surround your upper arms down to the elbows.
