How to Naturally Darken Stray Gray Hairs

It doesn't matter how old you are. Your first gray hairs can surprise you at any age. Although stray gray hairs can be removed easily -- at your local salon or with an at-home hair dye kit -- using a chemical dye isn't the healthiest option available. Even though chemical dyes are safe to use, they can leave your locks dry and damaged. Dyed hair is also expensive to maintain. Luckily, there are some great natural alternatives you can try instead.

Sage Tea

Brew a batch of strong black tea, by adding three black tea bags to 4 cups of boiling water.

Add 5 tablespoons of fresh sage or 6 tablespoons of dried sage to the black tea.

Rinse your hair with the sage tea after you shampoo. Or add the tea to 1 cup of leave-in conditioner, mix well and saturate your hair with it. Cover your conditioned hair with a shower cap, and leave it for 90 minutes.

Rinse your hair. Dry and style it as usual.

Repeat this process every day for eight weeks. It may take up to six weeks to start seeing results.

Mix one-half cup of strong brewed coffee, 1 cup of plain natural yogurt and 1 tablespoon of cider vinegar. The cider vinegar is important, as the acid in it helps open your hair follicles, allowing better color penetration.

Coat your hair with the entire mixture.

Cover your coated hair with a shower cap, to keep the mixture in place.

Set a timer for 90 minutes, and wait while the mixture fully saturates your hair.

Wash the coffee mixture out of your hair, and rinse well.

Repeat this process twice a week for six weeks. Then continue to use the mask on your hair once a week, to maintain the darkened color.

Cocoa Powder

Mix equal parts of your usual shampoo with unsweetened cocoa powder. If you condition your hair, also mix equal parts of your conditioner with unsweetened cocoa powder.

Save time by premixing a batch of cocoa shampoo and conditioner. Do this by dividing your shampoo between it's original bottle and another empty bottle. Mix cocoa powder into the new bottle to reduce the chance of confusion between this bottle and the original shampoo bottle. Do the same for your conditioner.

Wash and condition your hair as you normally would, using the cocoa shampoo and conditioner mixtures. Use these each time you wash your hair, to achieve stronger results than simply using them once.

Dry and style your hair as usual.

Continue to shampoo and condition your hair this way, until you achieve the desired results.

Soy Sauce

Mix one-half cup of cider vinegar with one-half cup of soy sauce.

Wash your hair as you usually do, using your regular shampoo and conditioner.

Use the cider vinegar and soy sauce mix as a final rinse on your hair.

Let your hair dry naturally.

Repeat the process as needed, to cover your stray gray hairs.
