A lion-mane headdress is the crowning touch for a lion costume. You can make your own and avoid paying expensive prices for a ready-made one. A few inexpensive materials and a half hour of your time is all that's required for this project. The headdress is comfortable to wear and will stay firmly in place.
Use scissors to cut two 3-inch-wide strips lengthwise from the yellow craft-foam sheet.
Staple the two strips together at one end.
Wrap the long strip around the head of the person who will be wearing it.
Hold the foam strip in position where it overlaps and slip it over the head of the wearer.
Trim excess foam off the strip leaving a 1-inch overlap. Staple it at the overlap.
Cut the yellow construction paper into 1/2-inch-wide strips of various lengths.
Staple the yellow construction paper strips to the headdress. Fix short strips over the front of the foam band. Make them stick out in all directions. Do the same with slightly longer strips a little further back on the foam band and increase the length as you work toward the back. Save the longest strips to attach to the top of the front of the headband so that they flow back and down over the back and sides of the band and the wearer's head.
