When you are younger, parties often involve Jell-O brand Jigglers in fun shapes. As you get older, Jell-O changes shape once again to become Jell-O shots. Jell-O shots usually consist of flavored gelatin and alcohol, sometimes with whipped cream inside the layering. Layered Jell-O shots are great for themes or holidays, as the colors can match color patterns for the party. The key to layering the Jell-O shots is patience, and the more layers you add, the longer it takes to set.
Purchase the supplies. Know which flavors you want to mix, what kind of alcohol you want to use -- vodka is the most commonly used, but any alcoholic drink will work -- and the appropriate cups. For layered shots, clear cups are necessary to show the different colors. For certain recipes, you may need flavored alcohol, fruit or whipped topping.
Determine the proportions. For a 6 oz. box of Jell-O, you will need alcohol and water, however, the higher the proof of the alcohol, the more water is needed, according to Drink Street. For 13 oz. of 30 proof to 50 proof alcohols, you will need 3 oz. of cold water. For 10 oz. of 80 proof to 100 proof, you need 6 oz. of cold water. For 6 oz. of 150 proof to 200 proof, you need 10 oz. of cold water. Divide these measurements in half for the 3 oz. box of Jell-O. However, if you are using a specific recipe, follow the directions given.
Mix the bottom layer color of Jell-O together in a medium-size bowl. First, mix the boiling water -- usually 1/2 cup to 1 cup -- with the flavored gelatin with a wooden spoon until dissolved and let cool. Add the alcohol.
Prepare the cups on a large baking tray. Allow enough space so the cups are not pushing up against each other.
Pour the bottom layer into the cups. You must first determine how thick you want the layers to be as well as how many layers you need. Once determined, pour that amount of the bottom layer into every cup and place in the refrigerator. Let sit until just set, enough so that the second layer will not mix into the bottom layer -- about 20 to 30 minutes.
Repeat the Jell-O making process by mixing the second layer color of Jell-O together. First mix the boiling water -- usually 1/2 cup to 1 cup -- with the flavored gelatin until dissolved and let cool. Add the alcohol.
Pull out the set cups from the refrigerator. Pour the second layer into the cups. Place back in the refrigerator and let set, just enough to hold the next layer -- again, roughly 20 to 30 minutes.
Repeat the mixing and setting for all layers. After the last layer has been poured, let the final product set for at least one hour before serving.
Have the amount of space in your refrigerator cleared before making the Jell-O shots. It must be a flat surface. Use a pencil or removable marker to mark the layers on the outside of the cup to help regulate pouring. Erase once the Jell-O has set.
