When you are planning a big event like a wedding, anniversary celebration or a milestone birthday, the people you are planning to invite should be made aware of the special date at least a month in advance. This will allow them to mark the date in their calendars before anything else gets scheduled on the same day. When addressing save-the-date envelopes, there are some formalities to keep in mind.

Addressing Save the Date Envelopes: The Mail-To Address

Choose a font. The mailing or outer envelope is typically addressed by hand, but it is also acceptable to use a legible calligraphy-style font that’s available on your computer.

Write or type the full name of the guest(s) on the front of the envelope as the top line of the address, starting with an appropriate title (for example, Mr., Mrs., etc.). If necessary, omit a middle name rather than just using an initial. The text should be placed in the center of the envelope.

Write the street or mailing address on the second line. Avoid using abbreviations and spell-out words like Drive, Street, Post Office Box, Avenue, North, etc. Use a second line if the guest’s address includes an apartment, building or suite number.

Write the city and state on the following line.

Write the zip code on the same line as the city and state if there is room. If not, write it on the center of the following line.

Addressing Save the Date Envelopes: The Return Address

Choose a font. You can use the same font or a variation of the one used for the front of the envelope.

Write the name of the person(s) responsible for receiving returned mail on the back flap of the envelope. Write the name using the appropriate title, followed by the full name.

Write the return street or mailing address on the second line. Do not use abbreviations for items such as streets, avenues or directional indicators (north, east, south, etc.). Use a second line if the return address includes an apartment, building or suite number.

Write the city and state on the following line.

Write the zip code on the same line as the city and state if there is room. If not, write it on the center of the following line.
