Preteens (also known as “tweens”) can be a tricky age to buy gifts for because they’re at an in-between stage in life. They’re not quite young children and they’re not yet teenagers. Stocking their Easter basket may prove difficult because of changing interests and locating age-appropriate items.
Books are a wonderful gift for all ages, and preteens are no exception. The “Harry Potter” series is one choice that many children at that age love. If you’re unsure as to what type of literature your kids are into, your local librarian is probably very in tune with what books are in vogue with that age group. Bring your librarian’s suggestions to a book store and stock up on some of the hottest series.
Kids at this age are generally very plugged-in to the digital age. If you’ve been looking for an excuse to purchase them a more expensive gadget, such as an iPod or digital camera, placing it in the middle of an Easter basket is sure to elicit delight and joy. If you’re searching for more affordable options, memory cards for existing gadgets are one idea. Other electronics ideas include iTunes cards, headphones and iPod cases. Pocket-sized digital photo frames that can be used as key chains can be purchased for less than $20 at many drugstores and online.
Boys and girls at this age are often beginning to notice the members of the opposite sex. Appearances can often mean a great deal at this age, and giving your teens a few personal items may help their social status and their self-esteem. Simple makeup is one suggestion for preteen girls; if you do not want your preteen wearing makeup just yet, consider adding a package of lip gloss and a small bottle of perfume to her basket. Boys may appreciate a small bottle of cologne or some deodorant. Inexpensive jewelry can also be added, such as rings, earrings and necklaces.
Easter typically falls in the spring, which means that summer is just around the corner—and you can be sure that your kids have summer vacation on the brain already. Include summer and beach items to get them even more excited about the upcoming season change. Ideas include sunglasses, sand toys, snorkeling mask and flippers, beach towels and suntan lotion. You can even use a new beach bag as the Easter basket and put all of the items inside.
