DIY Faux Fur Boot Sweaters

Make your old boots happy this winter by transforming them with some cute handmade boot sweaters.

Things You’ll Need

  • Old sweater (I used adult size medium)
  • Faux fur, 1/2 yard
  • Fabric scissors
  • Razor blade (optional)
  • Six buttons (I used toggle buttons)
  • Three elastic hairbands
  • Pins
  • Cloth measuring tape
  • Sewing machine
  • Chopstick (optional)
  • Needle and thread

Measure and cut four 10-by-17-inch pieces, two pieces from the faux fur and two pieces from the sweater. I used the back as well as front of the sweater. If you don’t want to use the scissors on the faux fur (to avoid cutting the fluffy hairs), use a razor blade to cut through the back of the fur instead. This will keep the fur intact. I used scissors to create a straight edge on the bottom of the fur pieces to keep the bottom of the boot sweaters clean.

Note: this size boot sweaters is meant for adults. If making them for children, be sure to adjust the measurements accordingly.

Cut each elastic hairband in half so you have six elastic pieces.

With right sides together, pin one faux fur piece to one sweater piece. Leave an 8-inch opening in the bottom. Do the same with the other faux fur piece and sweater piece.

Fold three of the elastic hairband pieces in half, and tuck them between the fabric layers on one of the 10-inch sides so the cut edges of the elastic are even with the raw edges of the sweater and the faux fur. Pin in place 2 1/4 inches apart. These will become the button loops.

Do the same on the other boot sweater.

Start at one edge of the bottom opening and sew around the pinned edges of the boot sweater with a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Remove the pins as you sew. Use a medium tension setting with a universal size 90/14 sewing needle. When sewing over the elastic button loop pieces, sew back and forth a few times to reinforce. Stop when you get to the other side of the 8-inch bottom opening. Repeat on the other boot sweater.

On both boot sweaters, trim each corner with a short diagonal cut.

Turn the boot sweaters inside out, and push each corner out with your finger or a chopstick.

On both boot sweaters, tuck the raw edges of the bottom opening in, and pin in place.

Hand sew the bottom openings closed with a whipstitch.

On each boot sweater, sew three buttons on the 10-inch side opposite the elastic button loops. Place them evenly with the loops.

Wrap the sweaters around your boots, button them up, and off you go to play in the snow while looking fashionably warm.
