Volunteering to aid or improve the community in which you life is a selfless act of kindness. Whether organizing a fundraiser or beautifying a children's playground, your service is appreciated by many citizens. Give back to your community through projects that benefit those in need and organizations that raise health and educational awareness.

Ronald McDonald House Charities

The Ronald McDonald House is a facility that houses families near the hospitals treating their critically ill or injured children. Children who have suffered a severe illness or accident may require care in a health facility far from their homes. Many parents cannot afford to rent hotel rooms and purchase food for each meal in order to stay with their children in their time of need. The Ronald McDonald House provides these services to families at no cost to them. Volunteer at your local Ronald McDonald House center by cleaning facility rooms, making dinners for the families and providing a caring ear to listen.

The American Cancer Society

The American Cancer Society recruits teams to participate in its annual Relay for Life. The event is an overnight run to recognize and celebrate cancer survivors, those suffering and people who donate to support the efforts to beat the disease. Organize a Relay for Life event in your community to pay tribute to those currently fighting and those who have lost their battle with cancer. Raise spirits and pride in the community in addition to funds with a Relay for Life race.

The United Way

Aid the educational efforts in your community by becoming a peer mentor. The New York City chapter of the United Way has developed a program to counter a 2005 statistic suggesting that less than half of high school students make it to graduation. The chapter has organized counseling, family involvement activities, leadership opportunities for youth, educational support and peer mentoring for at-risk students to increase their chances of continuing their schooling. Integrate a similar program into your community to contribute to the community's future citizens.

March of Dimes

The goal of the March of Dimes is to ensure babies are not born premature, which is the leading cause of newborn death. Reducing the number of babies born with birth defects due to premature birth the organization's main focus. Organize a walk in your community to raise funds for the cause. Citizens, include teenagers, can help by offering to care for children in your community and directing the parents to donate to the March of Dimes.
