How to Sweat-Proof Your Makeup

Whether you're caught in the middle of a heatwave or a tough workout, it's a challenge to keep your makeup on when you sweat. That's because as soon as you start to sweat, your foundation, concealer and eye makeup start to slide right off. Easily sweat-proof your makeup by introducing a few new products and steps to your makeup routine so it stays in place no matter how hot you get.

Prime Yourself

If you want your makeup to last in hot weather or during physical activities like exercising or dancing, start with primer. Foundation primer doesn’t just help fill in pores and fine lines; it helps your foundation last longer when you start to sweat by creating a barrier between your makeup and the oils in your skin. Apply a peasized amount to your face before your foundation or tinted moisturizer to lock it in place all day no matter how warm you get. Use eye primer before you apply your eye shadow too, so you can keep it on even if you start to get a little sweaty.

Keep It Light

The key to sweat-proof makeup is to use light formulas that won’t cake or melt off of your face. Tinted moisturizer is usually the best option when you're warm since it absorbs into the skin like a regular moisturizer but has a slight tint to even out your skin tone. If you have acne, scars, age spots or other discolorations that require more coverage, opt for an oil-free foundation with a matte finish that soaks up any shine that crops up if you start to sweat.

Go Powdered

Liquid makeup can hold up well when you're warm, but powder formulas are often the best bet, particularly if you have oily skin, because they can mattify your complexion. Instead of liquid or cream foundation, use a pressed powder or loose mineral powder foundation to even out your skin tone and help soak up excess shine. If you prefer liquid foundation or tinted moisturizer, dust a translucent powder over it to help set the makeup in place too. Ditch cream eye shadows in favor of powder formulas, though you may want to apply them with a damp brush to prolong their wear. Matte powder blush and bronzer are the best options for warm weather too, since they can help absorb oil and won’t add any shine to your face.

Waterproof It

Sweat can cause makeup to run and smudge, so choose waterproof formulas when the weather is hot. Mascara is one of the most common makeup items to run when you're sweaty, so apply a waterproof formula that won’t smudge or streak. Waterproof liquid eyeliner is a good option for defining your eyes when it's hot out or you're planning to workout. You can even find waterproof concealer formulas that won’t run or crease when you start to sweat.
