French fries are a simple side dish or snack you can make at home with minimal ingredients. To make basic french fries, you simply need potatoes, cooking oil and a bit of salt. However, by coating your homemade french fries with a flavorful batter, you can make them taste even better. In addition, the batter will keep the french fries crisp for up to two days after you've made them. This recipe yields four servings.
Wash three russet potatoes and slice them into strips no more than 1/4-inch thick. Place the strips in a large bowl of cold water. This keeps them from browning while you prepare the oil and batter.
Preheat 2 inches of cooking oil in a deep skillet over high heat.
Mix 1 cup of flour and 2 tbsp. of seasonings of your choice in a small bowl. Add 1/2 cup cold water, whisking constantly, until the mixture forms a thin batter.
Remove the potatoes from the water, pat them dry with paper towels, and dip them into the batter.
Place the batter-coated potato strips into the hot oil, and allow them to fry until they turn golden brown, about three minutes. Remove the french fries from the hot oil and allow them to cool on a paper towel for five minutes before serving.
If you have leftover fries, preheat the oven to 250 degrees to reheat them. Spread them on a baking sheet and put them in the preheated oven. Heat them for five minutes.
For fries that don't have as much fat, bake them at 500 degrees on a greased pan for 15 minutes or until golden brown.
