If your face has oily skin that also has dry, flaky patches, you have combination skin. You might find it hard to treat both dry and oily skin types at the same time without making your skin more oily or flakier. A healthy skin care regimen can help improve your skin tone overall.
Wash your face one to two times a day with an oil-free face wash. Wash your face before going to bed, then again in the morning if it is very oily. Otherwise, rinse your face with cool water to retain natural oils that prevent flaky skin.
Use a facial toner to even out your complexion. Choose a toner that contains salicylic acid to control shine and prevent breakouts. Apply a small amount of toner to a cotton ball and gently rub all over your face.
Apply a thin layer of moisturizing cream to your entire face. Choose an oil-free, noncomedogenic lotion that will not clog pores and is designed specifically for combination skin. Reapply moisturizer to dry patches on your face throughout the day.
Use a gentle facial exfoliant one to two times a week. Exfoliating your face removes dead skin cells, buffs away flaky patches and clears bacteria and dirt. Rub the exfoliant gently across your skin instead of scrubbing in a rough manner. Skip this step when you have red, inflamed acne blemishes.
See a dermatologist if at-home treatment does not help your skin or if the flakiness gets worse. The dermatologist can prescribe oral or topical medication to repair your skin tone.
Avoid toners with irritating ingredients such as alcohol, citrus and added fragrance, which can dry out your skin.
