Bagels are a breakfast staple, although the best bagels are made with few preservatives and can lose their freshness quickly. It is a waste of money to throw out stale bagels, because they can be reheated in a way that helps them regain freshness. While a stale bagel will never completely regain the flavor it had when it was fresh baked, with just water and a microwave the texture can be softened and the bagel will become edible again.

Place bagel on a microwave-safe plate.

Drizzle 1/2 teaspoon of water over the top of the bagel.

Microwave on high power for approximately 30 seconds, or until the bagel is hot and there is no more visible water.

Allow the bagel to cool before eating. Bagels reheated in this matter can also be sliced and toasted if desired.

  • A bagel purchased at a coffee shop or bakery can easily have 350 calories or more. Consider buying whole grain bagels instead of those made with white flour, as they will have more fiber. Replace regular cream cheese with a low-fat variety, or a healthier, plant-based fat such as peanut butter.
